10 Ways to Manage Holiday Blues

The holidays can paradoxically become a source of stress and sadness for numerous folks. Various factors can cast a shadow on the festivities. Complex family dynamics, heightened financial pressures and societal expectations can converge to create negative feelings. If we can acknowledge and be prepared for our triggers, one can manage issues hopefully more effectively.

Mindset shifts can help navigate with more balance.

Here are some strategies to possibly help create an environment of joy and connection.

Self - Care Make sure you are getting enough rest, eating well and engaging in activities that you enjoy.

Set Realistic Expectations - embrace inperfections

Connect with your loved ones, especially virtually.

Set Boundaries - Protect your time and energy. I remember when my children were young, and some industrious mothers would have these dreaded cookie exchanges! The idea was to bake fifty million dozen (I'm kidding!) cookies and show up at the tea, only to come home with cookies that my family didn't even like! I would have been better off to keep my own. Even though I am not a baker!! I learned to suggest that we go out to lunch to celebrate the holidays rather than the exchange.

Create new traditions. If a tradition brings negative emotions, possibly create a new one.

Focus on Gratitude - That can be a hard one for me! Be mindful of the positives.

Shifting your mindset can make a big difference. I have some new physical challenges that I have had to adapt to, i.e. now being in a wheelchair as opposed to walking. For me, that has involved and keeps involving keeping track of my thoughts and emotions. I'll talk more about that.

Limit social media exposure. It is better to remember that some portrayals are not realistic.

Seek help, & don't wait.

Use relaxation techniques, like deep breathing or yoga.

Plan for time alone. Read, soak in the tub, cuddle with your dog or cat! Self reflection is important for mental health.


By adopting intentional self-care practices, setting realistic expectations and leaning on the support of loved ones, your holidays can be enjoyed with resilience and grace.
